The Canarian destination in 2017 gave a quantitative leap in its objective of recovering national tourism. Last year the archipelago received 10% more Spanish travellers, and the expense associated with these holidays grew by 12%, to 1.798 million euros.
The trips of Spanish residents to the Canary Islands grew by 9,7% in 2017 compared to the previous year, reaching 6.2 million trips, according to the Familitur survey released yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The total expenditure of domestic tourists in their trips to the archipelago grew even more last year, by 11,9% compared to 2016, an evolution that confirms the steps towards the recovery of the national market. Spaniards employed 1.797 million euros in their trips to the islands, 190,6 million euros more than in 2016. The total number of overnight stays by national travellers who visited the Canary Islands also rose by 11,5%, up to 26.915.319 stays.
The average expenditure of Spanish travellers to the Canary Islands increased by 2,14%, to 287 euros, and the average daily expenditure remained at 67 euros, unchanged from last year.
This positive trend of national tourism was accentuated in the last quarter of 2017, when they accounted for 17.2% more trips of Spaniards to the islands than in the same period last year, reaching 1.434.853 trips.
The global outlay used in these trips from the national tourism to the Canary Islands grew by 21%, to 386.2 million euros. In total, residents in Spain made 193,7 million trips in the whole of 2017, 6,5% more than in 2016. These trips totalled 801.9 million overnight stays, 2.8% more. And the total expense associated with these trips rose by 6,9%, to reach 44.233 million euros.
91,1% of these trips of residents in Spain had as main destination Spain and 8.9% of trips were abroad, while 67,7% of spending was in Spanish destinations and 32,3% was carried out abroad. By autonomous communities, the most visited destination in 2017 was Andalucía, which accounted for 16,8% of total trips, followed by Catalonia, with 13%, and the Valencian Community, with 9,6%. The Canary Islands was the destination of 3,2% of the total trips of the Spanish people in 2017.
